July 24, 2017 – Bethpage, NY – King Kullen (Bethpage, NY) announced the names of 64 scholarship recipients during its 27th Annual King Kullen Scholarship Awards Program. King Kullen employees at the company’s 32 store locations – and their children 16 years of age or older – are encouraged each year to submit applications for consideration. The top 2017 awardee, Sophia Chianese, received a $2,500 scholarship; 19 King Kullen employees received scholarships of $250 each; and 44 children of King Kullen employees received scholarships of $250 each.
“King Kullen is pleased to recognize employees and family members with regard to their academic endeavors and community involvement,” said King Kullen Co-President Brian Cullen. “We congratulate Sophia on being an outstanding student and this year’s grand-prize winner. We are confident that she will achieve her career goals. We also applaud the 63 members of the King Kullen extended family that were each awarded a $250 scholarship.”
This year’s top $2,500 scholarship awardee, Sophia is a part-time bookkeeper at the Wading River King Kullen store. She looks forward to attending LIU/ C.W. Post College this fall to study accounting with the hopes of becoming a certified accountant at the end of the five-year program. Sophia graduated from Rocky Point High School with a 95.30-weighted average and is a member of the National Honor Society of New York State and the National Math Honor Society of New York State, as well as her school’s Mathematics Team. She also tutors underclassman in Algebra, her favorite subject. An avid runner, Sophia was a member of the Varsity Cross-County team.
In addition to being a stellar student while working part time, Sophia finds time to be involved in her community and is an active participant in the Leadership Group at her church, helping out with various events including their “Safe Halloween” program. She also enjoys the outdoors and camping with her family.
“I am extremely grateful and proud to receive this generous scholarship,” said Sophia Chianese. “As a senior heading off to college in the fall, I am excited for the future and aspire to live up to everyone’s expectations, including those of my family, as well as those of my extended King Kullen family.”
